The Many Faces of Luigi "Lulu" Ferrara
Our interview with TikTok's newest Italian star boy ⭐️⭐️⭐️
Lulu, whose TikTok handle @sonotroppoannoiato translates to “I’m too bored”, opened up to The Watering Hole’s editor, Steven Morea.
Grab your blue light glasses (they do nothing) and enjoy their conversation below!
Q: What’s your backstory?
Lulu: I’ve been creating TikToks for about a year now, mostly in Italian. Living in Italy, being openly gay, and creating content is a bit different from places like New York, where I’ve visited and felt freer. Here, I’ve had to tone down my personality, even with my family. They didn’t know I was gay until I accidentally came out during a live video. That’s how my mom found out, which led to an important conversation that ultimately brought us closer.
Q: What inspired you to start creating your own content?
Lulu: I’ve always loved pop music, especially gay anthems. I also sing, which was a big inspiration for my content. At first, I was nervous about speaking English on my platform, but as people from English-speaking countries started following me, I gained confidence. I actually learned English by watching shows like Pretty Little Liars, and social media has been a great outlet for me to express myself.
Q: Can you walk us through your creative process? How do you come up with ideas for your content?
Lulu: A lot of my content comes from my theater background. I’ve been studying theater for a few years, and my TikToks often feature monologues or dramatic performances. For example, my viral video based on Hereditary came from a theater assignment. I love combining drama with humor. My ideas usually start as random notes on my phone, and when I feel ready, I turn them into videos.
Q: Do you feel a sense of responsibility to advocate for LGBTQ+ or other issues through your platform? If so, how do you balance advocacy with entertainment?
Lulu: It’s tricky. I do want to talk about LGBTQ+ issues, but sometimes people expect me to speak on every issue just because I’m gay. I feel like I need to balance addressing topics I genuinely care about with keeping my content light and funny. It’s frustrating when I feel pressured to comment on every political issue, but I also understand that some topics are too important to ignore.
Q: Have you faced any backlash or criticism for your content, either from within or outside the LGBTQ+ community? How do you deal with it?
Lulu: Yes, especially when I started translating my English content into Italian. Older people didn’t respond well and hurled slurs at me online. It was tough, but I’ve learned to block out the negativity. Confidence helps—now, when I go out wearing feminine clothes, I do so proudly, and people don’t bother me as much.
Q: Who are your favorite queer people right now?
Lulu: I love Chappell Roan. She’s famous, but she keeps it so real. I also love seeing queer creators on TikTok who live normal, authentic lives. Their openness and creativity, especially in their fashion and content, inspire me every day.
Q: What’s the most rewarding interaction you’ve had with a fan or follower?
Lulu: At a concert, I was shocked when a whole line of people wanted to take pictures with me. It was surreal. Some people told me that my content had helped them be more open and happy. That’s the most rewarding part—knowing I’ve made a difference in someone’s life.
Q: What’s one piece of media (film, music, book, etc.) that everyone should check out?
Lulu: I’d recommend Scream! I also love following movie recommendations on Instagram and Letterboxd. For music, I’m really into Chappell Roan’s songs, and I’m always looking for indie artists with unique perspectives.
